This large twentieth-century basilica in the Suyapa district honours the Virgin of Suyapa, patroness of Honduras. Built in Gothic Revival style with tall twin towers and vivid stained glass, it draws pilgrims from across the country, especially during the February feast day. The tiny, revered wooden image of the Virgin, only a few centimetres tall, is normally kept in the nearby older church and brought to the basilica for major celebrations. The hilltop setting overlooks the capital.
