El Rosario Church

Standing on Plaza Libertad in the historic centre, this parish church startles visitors with its radically modern architecture. Completed in 1971 to a design by sculptor Ruben Martinez, it takes the form of a concrete half-cylinder whose bare arch shelters a vast open interior. Coloured glass set into the shell floods the nave with shifting rainbow light through the day. The tomb of independence figure Jose Matias Delgado lies within, making it both an architectural and patriotic landmark.
