This lavish mansion on the Paseo de Montejo was built in the early twentieth century for a general and governor, epitomising the wealth generated by Yucatán's henequen boom. Its marble floors and neoclassical detailing now provide the setting for the regional anthropology museum, which displays artefacts from the peninsula's Maya sites. Sculptures, stelae and funerary objects illustrate the region's ancient culture within gilded surroundings. The contrast between the aristocratic house and the relics it shelters gives the museum its character.
