This grand boulevard, laid out at the end of the nineteenth century, was modelled on the great avenues of Europe by the wealthy families who prospered from the henequen fibre trade. Broad and tree-lined, it is flanked by opulent mansions built in French and Italianate styles, several now serving as museums, banks and restaurants. Monuments and roundabouts punctuate its length, including a large sculptural ensemble celebrating the nation's history. It remains the most elegant thoroughfare in Mérida and a favourite for evening strolls.
