On the capitol grounds in Bismarck, this museum is the state's largest and traces North Dakota's story from prehistoric times to the present. A striking gallery displays fossils including full skeletons and a rare mummified dinosaur, reflecting the state's rich badlands paleontology. Other halls cover the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara peoples, homesteading, and the energy industry. Its collection of Northern Plains Native artifacts is among the finest anywhere, shaped with tribal input.
