Unlike most domed statehouses, North Dakota's capitol in Bismarck is a nineteen-story Art Deco tower, nicknamed the Skyscraper on the Prairie, built in the 1930s after fire destroyed the earlier building. Faced in Indiana limestone, it rises above the surrounding plains with an observation deck near the top offering long views over the Missouri River valley. The streamlined interior features period materials and a legislative wing at its base. Its stark vertical form remains one of the most unusual state capitols in the country.
