Founded in 1842, this Hartford institution is the oldest continuously operating public art museum in the United States. Its castellated Gothic Revival building and later additions house a broad collection spanning European Old Masters, American painting from the Hudson River School, Baroque works, and modern and contemporary art. It was among the first American museums to acquire works by Salvador Dalí and to champion Surrealism. Decorative arts, ancient artifacts.
