Overlooking Bushnell Park in Hartford, this exuberant High Victorian Gothic building was built in 1878 to designs by Richard Upjohn. Its gold-leafed dome, turrets, and pointed arches make it one of the most ornate American statehouses, and the exterior is studded with statues and carvings honoring Connecticut history. Inside, marble halls display historic artifacts including a statue of the Revolutionary heroine and cannons from the state's past.
