Standing on Copley Square in the Back Bay, this Episcopal parish church is a masterpiece of American architecture. Completed in 1877 to designs by Henry Hobson Richardson, it defined the heavy, rounded style that became known as Richardsonian Romanesque. The interior is celebrated for its richly polychrome murals and stained glass, much of it by John La Farge, and for the way the massive central tower anchors the whole composition. Reflected in the glass facade of the neighboring John Hancock Tower, it remains an active congregation open.
