Anacostia Community Museum

This Smithsonian museum in the historic Anacostia neighborhood focuses on the history, culture, and social issues of urban communities, with particular attention to the African American experience in the region. Founded in 1967 as one of the first federally funded community museums, it grew from a grassroots effort to bring the Smithsonian beyond the Mall. Exhibitions on migration, environmental justice, and neighborhood identity are often developed with local residents.
