Mandala House in Blantyre is the oldest surviving European building in Malawi, a two-storey verandahed house built in 1882 as the headquarters of the trading company that became the African Lakes Corporation. The colonnaded structure, set in mature gardens, now houses an archive, gallery and café and interprets the commercial and missionary history of the region. Its documents and photographs record the early colonial economy along the Shire and Lake Malawi.
