St Michael and All Angels Church in Blantyre is a remarkable brick church built by Scottish missionaries in the 1890s without trained architects, using local labour and locally made bricks. Its ambitious design blends Romanesque and Byzantine influences with domes, arches and towers, and it remains one of the most significant colonial-era buildings in central Africa. Constructed by the Church of Scotland mission that gave rise to the city, it is still an active place of worship. The church is celebrated for the ingenuity of its construction.
