Zambia's principal museum of history, ethnography and contemporary art occupies a modernist building near the city centre. Its ground floor rotates work by living Zambian painters and sculptors, while the upper floor traces the country's history from pre-colonial societies through independence in 1964. Displays include ritual masks, archaeological finds and photographs of the liberation struggle. Visitors typically spend an hour or two, and the museum also hosts temporary exhibitions and school programmes.
