The Grand Mosque of Bamako is the principal Friday mosque of the Malian capital, a large modern structure funded with Saudi support and completed in the late twentieth century. Its tall minarets and green domes dominate the crowded commercial district near the central market. On Fridays the surrounding streets fill with worshippers who spill onto mats laid along the pavements. As the main place of collective prayer in a predominantly Muslim city, it anchors religious life in downtown Bamako beside the bustle of trade.
