Treichville is a dense, lively district of Abidjan south of the Plateau across the Houphouët-Boigny Bridge, famous for its nightlife, markets and music. Laid out on a grid in the early colonial period, it became a centre of Ivorian popular culture and cuisine. The large covered market trades in fabrics, foodstuffs and crafts, while the streets fill after dark with maquis eateries and bars playing coupé-décalé. Its cultural centre and musical history make it a magnet for visitors.
