The palace of the Wa Naa, paramount chief of the Wala people, is a landmark of Sudanese-style mud architecture in the northern Ghanaian town of Wa. Its earthen walls, buttressed towers, and pyramidal forms recall the great mosques and palaces of the Sahel, reflecting centuries of trans-Saharan cultural exchange. The building serves as the seat of the traditional ruler and a centre of Wala identity and ceremony. For visitors exploring Ghana's less-travelled north, the palace offers a photogenic example of vernacular architecture.
