The national museum of Liberia in central Monrovia preserves artefacts documenting the country's indigenous cultures and its distinctive founding by freed African Americans in the nineteenth century. Housed in a historic building, its collection includes traditional masks, textiles, tools, and material relating to the settler government and its presidents. Much of the collection suffered during the civil wars, but the museum continues to serve as a repository of national heritage, offering an overview of Liberia's dual identity.
