St. George's Cathedral is the Anglican mother church of Freetown, built in the early nineteenth century by the settler community of freed slaves and their descendants. Constructed largely of local laterite stone with a distinctive red-brown hue, it reflects the colonial and Krio heritage of the settlement. The cathedral has weathered the city's turbulent history, including the civil war, and remains an active place of worship. Standing near the famous Cotton Tree, it is one of the oldest Christian buildings in West Africa.
