Cocoa House in Ibadan was, on completion in the 1960s, the tallest building in West Africa, financed by the wealth generated from the region's cocoa exports. The high-rise symbolised the ambitions of the Western Region during Nigeria's early independence years and long dominated the Ibadan skyline. Despite a serious fire that gutted much of the structure, it was restored and remains a landmark of the city. It stands as a monument to the agricultural prosperity that once underwrote the region's development and mid-century Nigerian ambition.
