On the shore of the Gulf of Gabès stand the ruins of Gigthis, a Roman port that grew wealthy on trade with the African interior. Excavations have uncovered a forum framed by a temple, baths, colonnades and the foundations of houses spread near the water. The town's prosperity reflected its role as a gateway between the Mediterranean and the caravan routes inland. Quiet and rarely crowded, the site offers a peaceful setting to picture the commerce of a coastal Roman town in the far south of Tunisia, away from the busier northern ruins.
