Beside the road between Tunis and the great site of Dougga lie the compact ruins of Musti, a small Roman town whose remains repay a brief stop. Scattered across the site are temples, an olive press, cisterns, a triumphal arch and the foundations of houses, with later Byzantine and Christian additions overlaid. A modest museum displays finds from the excavations. Easily combined with a visit to nearby Dougga, Musti offers a quieter and more intimate encounter with the everyday fabric of a Roman provincial settlement in the Tunisian interior.
