This mountain fortress dominates the skyline of El Kef in western Tunisia, its Ottoman-era ramparts built over older Byzantine and Roman foundations on a commanding height. Twin enclosures, bastions and gates survive, and the walls enclose courtyards used today for cultural events. From the battlements the view stretches over the terracotta rooftops of the old town and out across the plateau toward the Algerian frontier. Long a stronghold guarding the western approaches, the citadel remains the defining monument of the town.
