Below the basilica at Annaba lie the excavated ruins of Hippo Regius, the ancient port where Saint Augustine served as bishop in the fourth and fifth centuries. Spread across a green archaeological field are the remains of forums, baths, villas with mosaic floors and the outline of the great Christian basilica of the period. A site museum gathers the finest mosaics and sculpture recovered here. As a key setting in early Christian history, the ruins draw both pilgrims and travellers interested in late antiquity.
