Perched on a hill above Annaba and the ruins of ancient Hippo, this large Roman Catholic basilica honours Saint Augustine, the theologian who served as bishop of the city in late antiquity. Completed in the late nineteenth century, its ochre walls and mosaic-lined interior draw pilgrims and travellers alike. A relic of the saint is kept within, and the terrace commands views over the coastal plain and the archaeological field below. The basilica links the modern port town to a major figure of the early Christian world.
