Also known as the Mosque of the Barber, this shrine on the edge of Kairouan honours a companion of the Prophet and is among the most richly decorated buildings in Tunisia. Its courtyards and galleries are lined with brilliant glazed tiles, carved plaster and painted ceilings that reward slow exploration. Pilgrims come to venerate the tomb at its heart, set within a cool inner chamber. The dazzling ornament of the complex offers a vivid contrast to the austere grandeur of Kairouan's better-known great mosque nearby.
