Enclosed by low stone walls beside the sea, the old town of Hammamet is a compact tangle of whitewashed houses, small mosques and craft shops overlooking the beach. Its lanes are easy to explore in an afternoon, opening onto the ramparts and the kasbah at the water's edge. Cafes and workshops give the quarter a relaxed, lived-in feel despite the surrounding resorts. The contrast of bright white walls, blue doors and the Mediterranean beyond has made this medina one of the most photographed on the Cap Bon coast.
