On the western edge of Tlemcen stand the ruins of Mansourah, a fortified town raised in the early fourteenth century during a long siege of the Zayyanid capital. The most striking survivor is the towering minaret of its mosque, sheared in half yet still rising above the fields, its brick and stone facing patterned in relief. Fragments of the enclosing ramparts trace the outline of the abandoned settlement. The site offers a haunting picture of medieval military ambition, its isolated, weather-worn tower a favourite among photographers.
