Standing near the restored Taz Palace along the historic route toward the Citadel, this public fountain forms part of the conserved streetscape of the Darb al-Ahmar and Khalifa districts. Built to provide free drinking water as a pious endowment, its decorated facade and grilled openings reflect the tradition of charitable water architecture that once dotted the medieval city. Grouped with nearby mosques, palaces and tombs, it contributes to one of the most intact stretches of historic Cairo now open to walkers exploring the old quarter.
