This large planned district northeast of central Cairo was developed from the late 1950s as a modern administrative and residential extension of the capital. Laid out with wide avenues and government complexes, it holds military and ceremonial sites including a major parade ground, the tomb of a former president and a war memorial in the form of a great pyramid. Extensive housing, universities, malls and stadiums make it one of the city's principal modern quarters.
