Built by Mimar Sinan around 1571 for the powerful grand vizier Sokollu Mehmed Pasha, this mosque in the Kadırga quarter is prized for its harmonious proportions and superb İznik tilework. Set above a courtyard reached by stairs, the interior combines panels of blue and turquoise ceramic with a mihrab and minbar said to hold fragments of the sacred Black Stone from Mecca. The compact hexagonal plan shows Sinan's skill at fitting elegant space onto an awkward sloping site. It is praised among the city's finest smaller mosques.
