The Al-Kadhimiya Mosque in the northern Baghdad district of Kadhimiya is a major Shia shrine holding the tombs of two revered imams. Its complex is crowned by twin golden domes and four gilded minarets rising above a courtyard faced with mirrorwork, tile, and calligraphy. The sanctuary has drawn pilgrims for centuries and anchors a busy quarter of markets and religious institutions. Visitors can view the gleaming domes and minarets from the surrounding streets and observe the crowds passing through its ornate portals.
