An early 20th-century mosque in central Baku, built shortly before the Soviet era on the site of an older place of worship and funded largely by a philanthropist noblewoman. Its dome and twin minarets rise above the surrounding streets, and the interior is richly finished with tilework, calligraphy and gilding. It serves as the seat of the spiritual administration overseeing Muslim affairs in the wider Caucasus. Restored after Soviet restrictions, the mosque is an active place of worship and a landmark of the capital.
