A lively pedestrian square in central Baku, one of the main gathering places of the city, ringed by cafes, shops and 19th-century mansions from the oil-boom era. Named for the numerous fountains that decorate it, the square lies just outside the walls of the old city and marks the heart of the modern downtown. Landscaped with trees, benches and sculptures, it fills with strollers, especially in the cool of the evening. The surrounding streets form the main shopping and social district of the capital.
