A village in the Aragatsotn region of Armenia known for its imposing fortress, whose massive stone walls and towers enclose an older domed structure at the core. Standing on the open highland plain with Mount Aragats rising behind it, the stronghold guarded a route across the plateau and was expanded over successive periods of Persian and later rule. The rugged fortifications and the wide, empty landscape create a memorable scene. The village and its castle draw travellers exploring the historic sites scattered across the region.
