A 13th-century monastery in the Vayots Dzor region of Armenia, once an important centre of learning linked to a noted medieval university and scholarly community nearby. Its main church of St Stephen, built of dark stone, stands within a walled compound on a wooded hillside. Carved crosses and inscriptions record its patrons and history. The monastery declined in later centuries but retains its dignified architecture. Its setting amid forest and mountains, close to other monastic sites, appeals to travellers.
