A medieval monastery set in a forested mountain valley of southern Georgia, its main church rebuilt around the turn of the 14th century on the site of an earlier foundation. The domed stone church preserves notable frescoes and is enclosed by a compound with a bell tower. The monastery is associated with a revered icon of the Transfiguration and with the early spread of monasticism in the region. Its remote, green setting among the Meskheti highlands makes it a peaceful destination for travellers exploring this corner of the country.
