The sacred tooth of the Buddha rests in Kandy, and its temple made this highland city the spiritual heart of Sri Lanka — pilgrims still stream to the Temple of the Tooth Relic daily. Known of old as Senkadagalapura, Kandy served as the last royal seat of the Sinhala monarchy, which nurtured a culture stretching back more than two and a half millennia until the British took the island in 1815. UNESCO inscribed the sacred city in 1988.
