Pura Sakenan is an important temple on Serangan Island off the coast of Denpasar, one of the most venerated sanctuaries in southern Bali. Its origins are traditionally linked to a revered Hindu priest who spread religious teachings across the island many centuries ago. Every six months, according to the Balinese calendar, the temple becomes the focus of a major festival that draws throngs of worshippers who cross to the island in colourful processions bearing offerings.
