Serangan, sometimes called Turtle Island, lies just off the southern coast of Denpasar and is now linked to the mainland by a causeway. Historically associated with sea-turtle nesting, it hosts a conservation and hatchery centre where visitors learn about efforts to protect the endangered reptiles. The island is also home to the important Sakenan temple, focus of a major Balinese festival held every six months, and to fishing villages and mangrove shores.
