Jembatan Merah, the Red Bridge, crosses the Kalimas river in the old town of Surabaya and marks the site of a fierce clash during the 1945 battle in which a British brigadier was killed, helping ignite the wider uprising. Once the boundary between the European and Chinese quarters of the colonial port, the bridge is lined with Dutch-era trading houses, banks and warehouses that recall the city's mercantile heyday. Rows of ageing shophouses and stately facades survive nearby.
