Sambisari is a ninth-century Hindu temple near Yogyakarta that lay buried under volcanic ash and soil for centuries until a farmer struck its stones while working a field in 1966. Excavation revealed a compact shrine dedicated to Shiva, sunk several metres below the surrounding ground, surrounded by three smaller subsidiary temples. A linga and yoni stand within the main chamber, and carved niches hold statues of Hindu deities. The sunken setting, reached by descending stone steps into a grassy hollow, gives the site an unusual, secluded.
