The Brunei Museum, set on a bluff above the river a short distance from the capital, is the principal national museum of the sultanate. Its galleries cover Islamic art, the archaeology and natural history of Borneo, and the country's oil-fuelled modern development. A notable collection of ceramics, manuscripts, brassware, and gold artefacts illustrates the sultanate's long trading history and courtly culture. Overlooking the water where the stilt settlements spread, it introduces Bruneian heritage and identity.
