This synagogue in the heart of the former capital is the last remaining active Jewish house of worship in the country, a legacy of a once-thriving community of Baghdadi and other Jewish traders who settled during the colonial era. Built in the late nineteenth century, its blue-and-white interior features a grand central bimah, rows of wooden pews and a gallery, with ornate arches and columns reflecting the prosperity of its founders. Tucked among downtown shops, it recalls the city's cosmopolitan past.
