Villingili, officially Vilimalé, is a residential island a short ferry ride west of Malé that offers a greener and quieter counterpoint to the packed capital. Free of most cars, its lanes are lined with trees and homes, and a public beach on its western shore is one of the few near the city where residents can swim. Parks, football grounds and a relaxed pace make it a popular escape for a day out. The frequent ferry crossing gives views back to the Malé skyline.
