Republic Square

Republic Square, known locally as Jumhooree Maidan, is the main civic open space of Malé, laid out beside the waterfront near the ferry and harbour area. A large national flag flies at its centre, and the square is bordered by government buildings and lined with trees that provide rare shade in the dense city. It serves as a gathering point for national celebrations, official ceremonies and everyday relaxation. Its position at the arrival point for many boats makes it a natural first stop.
