Dechen Phodrang

Dechen Phodrang is a monastic school on the northern hillside above Thimphu, occupying the site of the valley's original dzong before the seat of government moved to Tashichho Dzong. Today it functions as a monastery and training centre where young monks study scripture, ritual and the arts. The complex preserves old paintings and sacred images, including works considered nationally important, while the sound of chanting fills its halls. A short walk uphill from the town centre reaches it.
