Changangkha Lhakhang is one of the oldest temples in the Thimphu valley, built in the twelfth century on a spur overlooking the modern town. Dedicated to a compassionate form of Avalokiteshvara, it is the temple where valley families traditionally bring newborns to receive an auspicious name from the presiding deity. Prayer wheels line the approach and the courtyard offers a broad view over the growing capital below. The fortress-like whitewashed structure preserves old murals and statues.
