The National Museum of Nepal at Chhauni, established in the early twentieth century, is the country's principal repository of art, history and natural history, spread across several buildings near Swayambhu. Its galleries hold stone and bronze sculptures spanning the Licchavi and Malla periods, arms and armour, coins, paintings and ethnographic material. A separate gallery gathers Buddhist art from across the Himalaya, and the grounds display historic cannon and aircraft.
