Bungamati is a compact Newar village south of Patan built around the shrine of Rato Machhindranath, a rain-bringing deity whose image spends half the year here and half in Patan. Its central square, dominated by a shikhara-style temple, is ringed by brick homes and woodcarving workshops for which the village is known. The 2015 earthquake destroyed the main temple, and reconstruction has followed traditional methods. Visitors wander lanes largely free of vehicles, watch artisans at work and observe daily agricultural and ritual life close to.
