Sankhu is a historic Newar trading town at the northeastern corner of the Kathmandu Valley, once an important stop on the caravan route to Tibet. Its narrow lanes are lined with brick courtyard houses, communal water spouts and small shrines, a fabric badly damaged in 2015 and now partly rebuilt. Above the town, the hilltop Vajrayogini temple complex draws pilgrims to its tantric goddess shrine among old trees. Visitors come for a slower glimpse of valley town life and the forested climb to the sanctuary overlooking the settlement.
